Personalised health cover

We offer a range of hospital and extras cover to suit the needs of people at different stages in their lives and with different financial requirements.

Generous extras benefits and limits

Our extras cover options offer great benefits across a range of services, including:

  • no-gap general dental check-ups once a year for Starter Extras, twice a year for Essential Extras and unlimited for Total Extras
  • optical limit of $600 over a fixed 2 year period on Total Extras, $500 over a fixed 2 year period on Essential Extras, and $300 over a fixed 2 year period on Starter Extras (The year that your limit resets is based on whether your membership began in an odd or even year.)
  • 85% benefit for eligible pharmacy items above our co-payment (currently $40.30 per prescription item) up to your Extras limit

Our members with extras cover also receive discounts at a number of optical retailers including OPSM, Laubman & Pank and Specsavers.

Youth Discount

The age-based premium discount introduced by the Australian Government allows insurers to offer a discount on hospital policies to members under the age of 30. The introduction of this initiative recognises the importance of private health cover for young people and aims to provide people within this age bracket cover that is more affordable. We are supporting this new initiative and will be passing on the full discount to eligible members. 

The discount allowable is between 2% and 10% per annum; depending on when a person purchases health insurance between the age of 18 and 30. The age discount applies until the member turns 41, after which it reduces at 2% per annum until they are 45 years old.

The table below outlines the discount applicable based on your age. It is determined by the age you are on 1 April 2019 or your age when you take out cover for the first time after 1 April 2019.

Health Management Programs

We want our members to enjoy the best of health, so when your doctor recommends a health management program to treat a specific health condition; we support it by providing benefits under our Total Extras cover.

Whether it's an exercise physiology program, gym membership, weight loss program, acupuncture or a quit smoking program, Doctors' Health Fund will provide a 50% benefit towards the program recommended by your doctor when you choose Total Extras, up to $200 per person or $400 for family policies.

Fast and easy claiming

Claims for Extras benefits from some allied health professionals can be made instantly via the online HICAPS system with no need to submit a claim to us.

For all other claims, we have a mobile claims app that is free to download. You simply take a picture of your claim receipt and submit it through the app. It typically takes less than three working days to reimburse your expenses once we receive the claim.
